Finding the right apartment has much to do with asking the right questions. You would need to make sure that the next place you would call your home should fit your goals, interests and of course, your values. So, when apartment hunting, be sure to add these questions to your list just to make sure you cover the essentials when it comes to modern living.

Question #1: Are pets allowed? Do you have a pet policy?

Today, this question is frequently asked. Most properties will charge a non-refundable pet deposit. This covers costs for deep cleaning when you decide to move out. It also covers the cost of any damage your pet may have caused. Restrictions on the kinds of pets may also be part of such a policy whether its allowing cats or dogs or even certain dog breeds.

Question #2: Do you have a strict guest policy?

In some places, if you have a visitor staying for more than two weeks, this isn’t allowed, technically speaking. Having your place rented out through Airbnb may also not be that easy. Some guest policies are stricter than the others, depending on the lease. Knowing for sure what is allowed and what isn’t saves you from the stress later on.

Question #3: Is the property secure? How secure?

When looking for an apartment, be sure to ask the property manager about the security features of the apartment. This includes the buzzer system, doorman, and others. You can go as far as asking people about the neighborhood and check the local authorities on the crime statistics. Better yet, get a feel of the area by taking a walk along nearby pathways and streets. Do you feel safe?

Question #4: How often will rent go up?

It is common knowledge that every time a lease is renewed, rent goes up. But what you want to make sure of is by how much it increases. Charges like these are not easily specified in the lease you are signing. If you are particular with looking for a long-term apartment, the answer to this is highly significant.

Question #5: Will I have a personal parking spot?

Today, if you own your own car, knowing about the apartment’s parking situation is essential. In fact, it should be one of your priorities. Street parking is both hard to find and expensive so finding an apartment with a parking garage is an advantage. You may want to ask how much a parking spot may cost.

Although there are always things to ask, these are some questions that you should not forget to ask when apartment hunting so you won’t be caught off-guard.
